Summer brings sunshine and more activities outside enjoying the beautiful weather. However, the downside of too much time in the sun can sometimes be the development of melanoma, a common form of skin cancer that is most often caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

More severe conditions of the disease can pose great risks and can even be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. For help appealing a denied claim, contact our Phoenix social security disability benefits attorneys who have years of experience navigating the complex application and appeals processes within the Social Security Administration.

Every melanoma case is different, but the disease is most often diagnosed based on its more common symptoms which are a change in size, shape or color of an existing mole. More dangerous forms of the cancer, such as when it becomes malignant melanoma, can bring with it much more serious side effects. These side effects often include swelling of the liver, trouble breathing, fatigue, headaches, bone pain and lymph node abnormalities.

If malignant melanoma metastases, a patient is eligible for disability benefits because the severity of this condition earns it a place on the Compassionate Allowances List (CAL). This placement means that the condition is so severe that the application process will be expedited.

If you do not meet the conditions of the CAL listing, you may still be able to qualify for disability benefits. In this case you will need to meet one of two criteria:

  • There must be sarcoma or carcinoma with metastases beyond the regional lymph node, or
  • Carcinoma must be invading deep external dermal structures like bone or skeletal muscle

It is important to note that even if you do not meet the above criteria, with proper documentation, you may still be eligible for disability benefits.

The help of a legal professional can make the process of appealing a denied disability benefits claim much simpler and easier to understand. We can help you gather the proper medical documentation and put together a strong claim in your favor.
